After a Saturday that saw the first qualifier – male or female – win a Grand Slam tournament when Emma Raducanu won the women’s title, Sunday could serve as a historic double dive at the US Open.
World number 1 Novak Djokovic starts his final game against Daniil Medvedev with two historic moments set to happen. The 34-year-old Serbian star needs a win to break a three-way tie with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for most men’s Grand Slam titles. They are tied at 20. He will also finish the first Grand Slam on the calendar since Steffi Graf in 1988.
“I am extremely inspired and motivated by this, without a doubt,” he said before the start of the tournament. It has been 33 years since Graf and 52 years since the last man, Rod Laver, accomplished the feat.

The final will not be a walk in the park for Djokovic. He will face No.2 Medvedev. The Russian, who was just as excited as any tennis fan to see Djokovic take on Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals, will play his third career Grand Slam final. He lost to Nadal in the 2019 US Open final and in January he finished second to Djokovic at the Australian Open. Overall, Djokovic is 5-3 against 25-year-old Medvedev.
